Gauge-Aws Type Metric – GAL #06M

The AWS Gauge GAL #06M, also known as the Automatic Weld Size Gauge, is a versatile inspection tool that performs many of the same functions as the Cambridge Weld Gauge. It helps welders and inspectors quickly verify weld dimensions and ensure compliance with American Welding Society standards, including D1.1 requirements.

You can use this gauge to measure fillet weld leg length, check concavity and convexity, and measure weld reinforcement. It delivers accurate readings with a simple, hands-on process.

To measure fillet weld leg length, place the gauge firmly against one plate. Lower it until it touches the weld toe. Slide the adjustable arm down until it meets the second plate. Read the measurement directly from the scale. This method gives a quick and reliable leg size reading.

For concavity checks, set the slide to the specified weld size using the Max Concavity scale. Position the 45-degree bevel against both surfaces. If the slide does not touch the weld, the weld lacks material and fails the requirement. You need to add more weld to meet strength standards.

To check convexity, follow a similar process using the Max Convexity scale. Set the required weld size, then position the gauge. If the weld stays within the limit, it meets specifications. Too much convexity can reduce weld integrity, so control is critical.

You can also measure butt weld reinforcement. Place the gauge across both plates and lower the slide onto the weld crown. Read the reinforcement height from the scale. This ensures the weld does not exceed allowable limits.

Most AWS gauges feature stainless steel construction, etched markings, and a thumb screw for smooth adjustment. They are compact, durable, and ideal for field or workshop inspections.
