Identifying cast steel & cast iron
If you have a cast piece and you are unsure whether it is cast iron or cast steel, take a file or a pick and scratch the surface. Cast iron forms dark grey dusty filings while cast steel forms light silver chips.
The cast iron filings are dark grey due to the high amount of carbon nodules present in the structure of the metal.
For welding cast iron we recommend high nickel welding alloys
For welding cast steel we recommend 312 stainless filler material.
